Teeth Whitening: A non-invasive way to enhance your smile

Teeth Whitening is valued by many people, as the treatment is quick, invasive and can satisfy the budget, time frame and temperament. Teeth whitening can be performed in two ways, in-house or dentist's office, both treatments will work efficiently.

Anyone who selects teeth whitening solution can observe a substantial improvement in the whiteness or brightness of their smile. However, it is not the permanent solution to the discolored teeth, as it requires proper care and maintenance for a prolonged effect.

What is the difference between whitening and bleaching?

The term whitening refers to restoring a teeth surface color by cleaning the debris accumulated on the teeth. Technically, any product which cleans or removes debris is considered to be a whitener. The term "Whitening" is frequently used, hence it is many a time used instead of bleaching. But there is a lot of difference between bleaching and whitening.

According to FDA, bleaching is referred to as a whitening method wherein the teeth are whitened beyond their natural color under permissible circumstances. This method strictly applies to the products that contain bleach (carbamide peroxide or typically hydrogen peroxide).

Teeth whitening procedures in Katy TX are considered to be safe when it is performed as directed by the dentist. If the procedure is not performed as recommended then there are certain risks such as tooth sensitivity and gum irritation.

What causes staining of teeth?

Your teeth can get discolored by stains or by changes inside the teeth. In general, teeth staining is mainly caused by 3 reasons, extrinsic, intrinsic and age-related.

Extrinsic: This type of stain is caused when the outer layer of the tooth (enamel) is stained. This is usually caused when a person who is habitual of drinking tea, coffee, red wine, soda and other deeply colored beverages. Additionally, foods which are acidic such as citrus fruits can contribute to the erosion of enamel.

Intrinsic: This type of stain is caused when the inner structure of the tooth (dentin) gets a yellow tint. This type of discoloration is typically caused due to aging, trauma, exposure to minerals such as fluoride during childhood.

Age: There is a correlation between age and tooth color. As one ages teeth darken due to stain accumulation and wear & tear. As a result, teenagers may likely experience immediate results from teeth whitening. When a person is in his twenties, teeth begins to show yellow cast, and in forties, the yellow gives way to brown.

Other reasons might include teeth grinding, which is usually caused by stress. Grinding can create minute cracks in the teeth which may result in darkening of biting edges.
